Abstract

The American occupation of Iraq began on March 20, 2003, led by the United States and its allies, under the pretext that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction and had ties to terrorist groups. The main military phase ended with the fall of Baghdad on April 9, 2003, and the collapse of President Saddam Hussein's regime, ushering in an era of occupation and subsequent widespread political and security transformations. As for the Emirati press, studies analyzing the coverage of newspapers such as Al-Ittihad, Al-Bayan, and Al-Khaleej revealed a general stance of opposition to the war and warnings about its consequences for Iraq and the region. Press coverage focused on the humanitarian impact of the war, the losses suffered by the Iraqi people, and concerns about regional instability, while advocating for political and diplomatic solutions instead of military action. With the launch of military operations in March 2003, Emirati newspapers focused on the human and material losses suffered by Iraq, and devoted extensive coverage to following the battles and the fall of Iraqi cities, in addition to highlighting the Arab and international positions rejecting the war. In general, Emirati newspapers during 2003 reflected a position characterized by reservation towards the war and concern about its results, while emphasizing the importance of Iraq regaining its independence and sovereignty and ending the state of occupation.
